Skills Canada PEI External Credential
Department of Education and Early Childhood Development has recently approved Skills Canada Prince Edward Island (SCPEI ) as an External Credit provider.
PEI high school students are now able to receive a credit toward high school graduation when they compete in Skills Canada competitions at the provincial and/or the national levels.
Students meeting the criteria outlined on the right can apply for an elective Grade 12 credit. You can also download the criteria information PDF below.

Criteria – Option 1:
Students who are eligible to receive this credit must have successfully participated at a Skills Canada Competition at the National level, which includes a minimum of:
• (18 hours) Preparation for Provincial Competition – this includes 6 hours at the school level to be selected for Provincials competition and 12 hours preparation for Provincials
• (6 hours) Provincial Competition
• (5 hours) Once the student has been chosen to be a part of Team PEI, there will be required team meetings, which each competitor must participate in.
• (30 hours) Preparation for National competition – this includes practice hours required in preparation for Nationals, all hours must besigned off by an industry/community mentor who is approved by Skills Canada.
• (4 hours) National Orientation
• (10 hours) Opening/Closing Ceremonies at Nationals – this includes guest speakers and opportunity for students to network with peers from across Canada
• (12 hours) National Competition Days
• (36 hours) Team Travel + Team Building Activities – these hours are outside the National competition activities and include group trips to points of interest within the province of travel where students are exposed to cultural and economic learning experiences.
Criteria – Option 2:
Students who are eligible to receive this credit:
• Must have prepared for and participated in a minimum of 4 Skills Canada competitions at the provincial level during their high school careers – minimum of 24hours per competition including preparation and the actual competition hours
• Must have received a minimum mark of 70% on at least two of the three competitions they participated in
• Can use mentoring hours to make up the total minimum 110 hour requirement, however these hours must be signed off by an industry/community mentor who is approved by Skills Canada
Students must be a registered Skills Canada PEI competitor. Students can register for competition through their high school or on our website.
Prior to competition and/or completion of the criteria outlined above, students must complete a “Student Intention Form” which needs to be signed off by Skills Canada PEI and the school Principal.
Upon completion of the criteria outlined above, students must submit the completed “Competition Practice Hours” document (available from SCPEI) to Skills Canada PEI and obtain a completed “Student Completion Form”.
Please note all documentation must be completed in full. Partial completion of any forms or Competition Practice Hours that have not been signed off by a mentor may result in delay and/or denial of credit.
