PEI Students Excel at the Skills Canada National Competition

The 24th Skills Canada National Competition wraps up in Edmonton. 

Charlottetown, PE June 8, 2018 – Team PEI brought home six medals from the 24th Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) held in Edmonton, Alberta, recently.

The Skills Canada PEI team consisted of 42 students and apprentices. Two students won gold medals, Erin Chiasson, Charlottetown Rural High School, in the IT Software Solutions category and Alex Lannigan, Holland College, in the Automotive Technology competition. Brett MacKay, an apprentice at 3Points Aviation won a silver medal in Precision Machining; and two apprentices won bronze medals, Mary Beth Perry, an apprentice at Island Beauty Secrets in the Hairstyling competition and Robbie McMahon an apprentice at Olympia Electric in the Industrial Control competition. Erin Chiasson also won Best in Region.

The event, which was held at the Edmonton Expo Centre, drew over 10,000 spectators who watched 550 of Canada’s best skilled trade and technology students and apprentices compete in 44 separate competitions in six different sectors: construction, services, manufacturing, transportation, information technology and employability. The National Skills Competition is the only Olympic style competition that highlights areas of trades and technology and celebrates student excellence in these areas.

Each year Skills Canada PEI organizes provincial competitions in 36 areas of trades and technology competitions. The winners of these competitions form the P.E.I. delegation for the national event.

The 2019 National Skills Competition takes place in May 2019 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
